These pictures are of the Salt Mines in Wieliczka near Krakow. The mines have been in operation since the 1600's. They are still producing salt. Over the years the miners passed the time by carving sculptures in the solid blocks of salt. This salt has a grey/green color before it is processed. There is a chapel big enough to hold 300 people for weddings. The chapel, even the chandeliers are made of salt, was originally only used by the miners.
Very interesting tour. Over 180 steps to get down, 1.5 miles of shafts and chambers and then thank god an elevator to the top!!
